Sweet-Smelling Gifts These charming potpourri filled pillows allow you to talk about the aromas of your backyard with friends and loved ones. All you will need is cloth, thread along with your favorite dried crops. The following recipes are only guidelines, don't hesitate to mix your own fragrances and discuss them with us!

Create a base pillow These scented pillows are simple to make, and the base is the exact same regardless of how you stuff or decorate them. Cut two matching squares in the cloth of your choice, approximately 4 inches. Sew three sides with a half-inch seam allowance. This may be accomplished by hand, using a machine, or using cloth adhesive. Then turn your pillow inside out, stuff with your chosen fragrant filling, and stitch or glue the last side closed. Now you are free to decorate!

Fragrant Evergreens Keep the odor of Christmas close with this evergreen potpourri mix. Mix needles and leaves from pine, juniper, cypress or your favorite citrus trees with a couple drops of cedar oil and twice as many drops of pine oil. Be sure to bring some orris root or walnut ribbon to the mix to assist the scent last longer.

Relaxing lavender This relaxing lavender odor is excellent to have close at bedtime for a relaxing odor because you fall asleep. Mix dried lavender with a single drop of vanilla oil and one drop of bergamot. Add some orris root or oak moss to ensure that the fragrance lasts.

Fruit mix Fill out a pillow with this sweet mixture of fruity scents by mixing pieces of cinnamon stick, cloves and allspice using dried apple, lemon, orange, lime and cranberry. Add a couple drops of vanilla oil and orange oil with a bit of orris root or walnut ribbon for a sweet smell that lasts.

Vanilla Rose This sweet, floral odor not only smells great, but it also looks amazing mixed together. Mix dried camellia blossoms, dried rose petals, crushed vanilla bean and pine needles for fragrance and add orris root or oak moss so the candy odor will last.

Spiced apple This fragrance is a sweet reminder of glasses of apple shared with friends and family. Mix bits of cinnamon stick with dried apple, grated nutmeg, whole cloves and dried orange peel. Add a couple drops of vanilla or your favorite lavender oil and a little orris root or walnut ribbon to maintain the odor.

Refreshing citrus This refreshing citrus odor can help kick start your day with a little burst of energy. Mix your selection of dried citrus fruits--lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit, clementine or kumquat--using a couple drops of lemon oil and twice as several drops of orange oil. Add just a tiny orris root or oak moss to hold the scent.

Cheerful flower The earthy blossom with this pillow is a great reminder of the coming spring, but the chilly blue shade keeps the appearance appropriately wintery. The flower is easy to make using a span of thin ribbon. Loop the ribbon over onto itself to make petals, adding a stitch at the center to hold it together. Start by producing massive loops, but make them progressively smaller each time you complete a circle of petals (about 10 loops). Whenever your flower is done, attach it to center of your sweet-smelling pillow!

Stripes and switches This modern pillow relies on a grey, pinstripe fabric. Be sure the colours of the stripes are similar, such as this gray and white, to maintain the look clean. Add a pattern of buttons in neat rows to complete the look.

Clove stripes To make this pillow, begin with a tough, tan cloth for the foundation. Add a thin layer of white paint to the upper half, letting your brush scatter the surface of the fabric--you don't need paint in all of the cracks. Insert a row of tsp throughout the middle, stitching each on one at a time together with white thread to make a thin stripe of white across the dark cloves.

Chevron and Roses The geometric repetition of chevron on this fabric matches the soft roses to create this shabby chic pillow. Create the roses by choosing a decorative ribbon--ours had pleats already sewn in. Roll the ribbon up, adding hand tiles in the bottom to maintain the flower together. Pull your flower open and attach to a pillow with a few more stitches or cloth adhesive.

Grapevines You shouldn't need to look far to find the decorations for this natural pillow--they might even be in your garden! Keep an eye out for some particularly twisty old grapevines, and gather then into a small group. You can use fabric glue to attach them stitching them generates a perfect finishing touch. Consider using natural white to your cloth and your thread so the contrast between the blossoms and cloth will not be overly sharp.

Burlap and cinnamon To create this rustic holiday pillow, start by using two layers of burlap. Once your square is stuffed, attach a stick of cinnamon using twine. Paint wooden beads to look like cranberries by painting them a bright, solid red and then adding darker reddish to a half. Tie the "berries" on the ends of the twine and add a few smaller crimson beads for accents.

Share your creations! Offer your sweet-smelling sachets as gifts, place in dresser drawers, cars or anywhere you need a fresh burst of aroma to the holiday period.
